Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that his District and Washington offices will be closed on Friday, June 18, in observance of Juneteenth, the newest federal holiday. Congressman Cohen also made the following statement about the observance of the holiday:

“I have long celebrated Juneteenth and was pleased to vote on Wednesday evening to create the federal holiday in celebration of freedom, the most American of values. I’m pleased President Biden swiftly signed the measure into law today in time for the holiday to be fully observed this Saturday. The proclamation of emancipation made to the enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865, changed the course of American history and should be celebrated by all Americans. I hope everyone will take a moment to recall that history and revel in it.”
