WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) today announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved the final permits for the Grosse Ile Bridge repairs and construction will begin soon. State and local government filed their approval permits on Wednesday June 2nd, allowing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to finalize the approval process today. The Grosse Ile Bridge, located in Wayne County, manages about 75% of the traffic to the island of Grosse Ile and has been closed for over a year, leaving 10,000 residents with one toll bridge option to travel on and off the island. Rep. Dingell has worked with Wayne County, Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to forge an efficient and safe path forward to repairing and reopening the Bridge.
“Residents of Grosse Ile have been waiting too long for repairs to begin on the Grosse Ile Bridge,” said Rep. Dingell. “Today’s Army Corps of Engineers permit approval is an important and necessary last step for those repairs to begin. This approval means that construction on the Bridge repairs should begin as soon as possible. We will remain vigilant to support these efforts until these repairs begin, are completed, and the Bridge is reopened.”
