WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) released the following statement after a deadly impaired driving crash occurred in Wayne County, MI this morning:
“We introduced the HALT Drunk Driving Act to ensure that what happened to the Abbas family would never happen again. When our community lost the Abbas family, I remember the pain-stricken faces of Ali, Isabella, and Giselle’s young classmates. They came to me with tears in their eyes pleading: ‘If technology exists to prevent this, why aren’t we doing something about this in Washington?’
“Another life was taken today in Michigan’s 12th District because this critical technology is not yet on our roads. By installing this prevention technology in all vehicles, we can save over 9,400 lives each year – we must work to get it engaged immediately.
“We can’t wait any longer to make our roads safer. I’m committed to continuing to work with advocacy groups, the auto industry, and federal regulators so we can stop these preventable deaths and ensure accidents like this morning’s don’t impact yet another community.”
In 2019, Dingell introduced the Honoring Abbas Family Legacy to Terminate (HALT) Drunk Driving Act after the Abbas family from Michigan was tragically killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver.
