Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, today applauded the announcement by Attorney General Merrick Garland to file a challenge against Georgia’s new restrictive voting laws.
The case will be overseen by Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta and Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke, two leading civil rights lawyers with extensive experience and expertise in protecting voting rights. Congressman Cohen is Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties which has s jurisdiction over voting rights.
He made the following statement:
“I applaud the decision by the Department of Justice to file an action later today to challenge the new voting laws in Georgia intended to make it more difficult to vote. These new voting restrictions would make it illegal to offer food or water to people waiting in line to vote, limit the number of voting drop boxes, limit the hours for Sunday ‘souls to the polls’ voting and make other changes aimed at suppressing the vote. I salute the Department for living up to America’s commitment, in principle though not always practice, to ensure all citizens have the freedom to vote and access the ballot box.
“Georgia’s brazen discriminatory voting restrictions demonstrate the need for Congress to act as well. My subcommittee will continue our steadfast work examining voting rights and developing new legislation that protects the fundamental right to vote.”
Congressman Cohen will preside at his Subcommittee’s hearing on “The Need to Enhance the Voting Rights Act: Preliminary Injunctions, Bail-in Coverage, Election Observers, and Notice” on Tuesday.
