WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Katie Porter on advancing to the general election in California’s 47th Congressional District. EMILY’s List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Rep. Porter has risen to meet every challenge that has ever been presented to her, from predatory lenders on Wall Street to politicians who want to take away the right to choose. She has consistently demonstrated both the will and the ability to fight for justice for those she represents and for all Americans, and we know that she will continue to do so as the representative of this newly redrawn district. EMILY’s List is thrilled to support Rep. Porter as she advances to the next step in an election that will be crucial to protecting the rights of millions.”

Katie Porter has spent nearly 20 years as a consumer advocate taking on Wall Street banks and powerful financial institutions that try to take advantage of middle-class families. After graduating from Yale University, she went to Harvard Law School and learned bankruptcy law from influential professor Elizabeth Warren, with whom she co-authored a book on debt and credit law. Rep. Porter went on to teach law at the University of California - Irvine, where she founded a consumer protection legal clinic. She has earned national acclaim for her fights against unfair practices by Wall Street banks, credit card companies, student loan servicers, and predatory lenders. Rep. Porter  lives in Irvine with her three children, where she has helped lead her sons’ Cub Scout pack.

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
