WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on advancing to the general election in New Mexico’s gubernatorial election. EMILY’s List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“As the nation’s first Democratic Latina governor, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has been a champion for hard-working New Mexican women and families, bringing communities together to tackle the toughest challenges facing the state and chart a brighter economic future for all. From being a national leader in the fight against COVID-19 and investing in quality public education, to protecting New Mexico’s natural resources and defending women’s rights and reproductive freedom, EMILY’s List is proud to stand with Gov. Lujan Grisham as she seeks reelection.”
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is a dedicated public servant running for reelection to build on her life’s work of fighting for all New Mexico women and families. A proud 12th-generation New Mexican, Lujan Grisham ran for governor of this diverse swing state in 2018 and won, becoming the first Democratic Latina to be elected governor in U.S. history. In 2004, Lujan Grisham was appointed secretary of the Department of Health, New Mexico’s largest state agency, where she expanded the number of school-based health centers, banned junk food from schools, and instituted teen pregnancy prevention programs. After leaving state government in 2007, Lujan Grisham co-founded and worked as president of a successful small business to help to provide access to health insurance to New Mexicans who were denied coverage. She later won a seat on the Bernalillo County Commission, serving the state’s most populous county before winning an open seat in New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District in 2012 with the full support of the EMILY’s List community. A three-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Michelle served as chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and is a powerful advocate for working families who don’t have a seat at the table.
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
