In advance of Sunday’s observance of America’s 245th birthday, Congressman Cohen (TN-09) released the following statement:
“On Sunday, friends, family and neighbors will gather for barbecues and fireworks to celebrate our nation’s independence. When our founders signed the Declaration of Independence 245 years ago, they set us on a path to liberty and freedom that has become the envy of the world.
“Through our history, that path has often diverged from the ideal course and has needed corrections that included defeating the Confederacy in the Civil War, abolishing slavery with the 13th Amendment, other major constitutional amendments extending the right to vote, school desegregation, and the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Acts. Today, we see the need for further course corrections to address voter suppression, systemic racism, gun violence, economic inequality, climate change, and the causes of the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
“While we have made great progress, there is more work to do. As Americans and Memphians enjoy our national holiday, I encourage reflection on the bravery and foresight of our founders, who risked their ‘lives, fortunes and their sacred honor’ on the noble experiment that has permitted citizens for centuries to make their own sacrifices to bring us toward a more perfect union.
“I wish everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July.”
