Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today applauded the decision by the Department of Justice that the IRS must release President Donald Trump’s income tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee after finding it had a legitimate legislative purpose in requesting them.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“The law says the tax returns ‘shall’ be turned over to the Ways and Means Committee, a directive Trump’s attorneys general fought successfully during his time in office. Today’s decision is the right one and I suspect it will be both revealing and damaging.”

The Department of Justice decision comes more than a year after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the former president’s tax returns and other financial records had to be turned over to Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., who had subpoenaed them as part of a criminal investigation of the Trump Organization
