WYANDOTTE, MI - Today, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) announced that the City of Wyandotte Fire Department will receive a $504,636 regional grant through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. This funding will be used to provide firefighters with new Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses that are compliant with the National Fire Protection Association, helping firefighters stay safe and better protect the community.

“Our firefighters and first responders put their lives on the line every single day to keep our communities safe,” Dingell said. “This critical funding will ensure that they are well equipped with up to date tools to stay safe while on the job and protect Michigan families. This grant funding is a testament to Chief Wright’s leadership and the strong efforts of the Wyandotte Fire Department.”

“Through a collaboration with many regional fire department partners across Southeast Michigan, we were able to secure funding for essential equipment that allows our firefighters to breathe and work in hazardous environments like structure fires and hazardous materials incidents,” said Wyandotte Fire Chief Daniel Wright. “These funds will allow us to provide our first responders with the best equipment available today, enabling them to more efficiently and safely serve citizens in our communities during the most critical moments as well as work more effectively with our partner agencies on large scale emergencies.”

The AFG program awards grants directly to fire departments and EMS organizations that are unaffiliated with a hospital to enhance their response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public and emergency response personnel with respect to fire and all other hazards.
