Congressman Steve Cohen, Co-Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, better known as the Helsinki Commission, and the commission’s Ranking Member, Congressman Joe Wilson, today introduced a resolution condemning the crackdown on freedom of expression in Belarus following last year’s fraudulent presidential election.

The resolution condemns the campaign of repression by the government of President Alyaksandr Lukashenka, reciting a litany of assaults on free expression by political opponents, peaceful protesters, cultural figures, journalists, trade unionists and others. It calls for the immediate release of those jailed for exercising their freedom, seeks the Biden Administration’s help in assisting those who have been tortured, commends the bravery of those opposing autocracy, and “supports the aspirations of the Belarusian people in their struggle for freedom and human rights.”
