Congressman Cohen Votes to Lift Debt Ceiling

Tennessee

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today voted for, and the House passed, a temporary increase to the debt limit so that the United States can meet its obligation to creditors through at least early December. The vote followed Senate action last week. The measure now goes to the president to be signed into law.

The party-line vote on passage was 219 to 206.

After the vote, Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Voting to raise the debt limit was the only responsible thing to do to protect our economy. Playing Russian roulette with the full faith and credit of the United States, and potentially jeopardizing our senior citizens’ 401(k)s, Social Security benefits and our own and the world’s economy, was once considered unheard of, but not in these hyper-partisan days. Republicans need to start governing. It is disheartening that we will have to go through this dangerous exercise again in December, but I am glad it is behind us for the moment.”
