Congressmen Steve Cohen (TN-09), Steve Chabot (OH-01), Gerry E. Connolly (VA-11) and Joe Wilson (SC-05), the Chairmen of the bipartisan Caucus on U.S.-Turkey Relations and Turkish Americans, today released the following statement congratulating Turkish Americans and the Turkish public as they celebrate Turkey’s 98th Republic Day on October 29, commemorating the day when Turkey was founded as a Republic:
“As the Co-Chairs of the Congressional Turkey Caucus, we congratulate the people of Turkey and Turkish Americans as they celebrate Republic Day. On this day, the Republic of Turkey was formally established and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the visionary leader of modern Turkey, became its first President.
“Today, Turkish Americans are an important part of the fabric of the United States, and have made contributions to the arts, science, academia, and business.
“Turkey remains a critical ally, as a member of NATO with a majority Muslim population that is strategically located at the intersection of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and plays a key role in Transatlantic security, and the fight against terrorism. Turkey also continues to host the largest number of refugees worldwide.”
