U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) held her third annual High School Art Competition for the 8th Congressional District this weekend, continuing an annual celebration of the district's youth and their artistic talents.
This year, there were 37 entries in the art competition from 26 students. Many of the students used their artwork to express their emotions and feelings around the COVID-19 pandemic, the ensuing lockdowns, and the resilience local communities have shown over the last year. The 2021 first place prize was awarded to Monica Garcia of Lake Orion High School for her painting "Ofrenda."
- In second place: "Daphne's Pink Tree" by Rosette Rwiyaza of Everett High School.
- In third place: "Life is in Your Hands" by Abbigail Maisel of Lake Orion High School.
- In fourth place: "Leopard of the Rainforest" by Collin DeGrand of Hartland High School.
- In fifth place: "Cello" by Ana Trujillo Garcia of Lake Orion High School
Last week, Slotkin held a reception at the Brighton Light House where the winning pieces were announced. As the first place winner, "Ofrenda" will hang in the United States Capitol for one year. The other winners will be showcased in Slotkin's Washington and Lansing offices for the next year.
The Congressional Art Competition occurs annually in U.S. House districts around the country and is sponsored by the Congressional Institute.
