Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) issued the following statement after President Biden requested that Congress vote to suspend permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) with Russia:

As I said earlier this week, we must go further in responding to Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine — that’s why I had called to suspend permanent normal trade relations and apply even more crushing economic pressure on Putin. There is bipartisan agreement on this matter in Congress, and many of our allies and partners around the world are taking similar actions. I am glad that today, President Biden voiced his support for suspending PNTR with Russia as well. Until Putin stops his ghastly assault on the Ukrainian people, we must explore every possible policy option that can weaken Russia and bring us closer to peace.”
