Congresswoman Slotkin votes to move forward critical investments in Michigan’s physical and human infrastructure
WASHINGTON, DC –– U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted on a procedural motion to advance the Senate's bipartisan infrastructure package and start the process of writing a reconciliation bill centered around investments in "human infrastructure," after a commitment was secured from House leadership to vote on final passage of the bipartisan infrastructure bill by September 27:
"Earlier today, I voted on a procedural motion to both advance the bipartisan infrastructure package and to start the process of drafting a reconciliation bill.
"I believe that when it comes to the bipartisan infrastructure deal approved by the Senate, we must strike while the iron is hot. While I would have preferred a final vote on the bipartisan infrastructure deal this week to get it to the President's desk, it's critical to see the Speaker commit to holding the final vote on this bill no later than September 27.
"The bipartisan infrastructure deal is a critical investment in our nation's infrastructure, and Michiganders will benefit enormously from it: An expected $7.3 billion to repair Michigan's highways, $55 billion to replace lead water pipes that are making people sick, resources we need to address PFAS contamination, and $100 million to help expand high-speed broadband coverage in Michigan, especially to our rural communities. These are major, strategic investments in our state's infrastructure, and the House should vote on it as soon as possible.
"I will also consider a reconciliation package, once there is legislation to review. My vote today allows the drafting process to begin. Once I see actual legislative text, I'll evaluate it just as I would any other piece of legislation. If it's truly transformational for Michigan families, I will consider it on its merits."
