Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) applauded the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote this morning to advance the nomination of Memphis lawyer Andre Mathis to become a judge on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. The vote was 12-10.
The court, based in Cincinnati, hears appeals in federal cases from Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“I am pleased and proud that Andre Mathis, an alumnus of the University of Memphis and its law school, is one step closer to taking a seat on the Sixth Circuit as the first Black man on that court from Tennessee. I congratulate the Senate Judiciary Committee for taking this action and again commend President Biden for nominating this highly respected Memphis lawyer.”
Mr. Mathis, a partner in the Memphis law firm Butler Snow, was previously a member and associate at the Glankler Brown law firm. He is a graduate of the University of Memphis (2003) and its Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law (2007). If confirmed by the full Senate, Mr. Mathis would take the Sixth Circuit seat of Judge Bernice B. Donald of Memphis who has announced she will be taking senior status once a successor is confirmed.
