Money will go to police and fire departments in Oakland County to cover overtime expenses and other costs incurred in the aftermath of the shooting

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) announced today a $360,000 grant from the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the police and fire departments that responded to the Oxford High School shooting. The grant will be administered through the DOJ's Emergency Federal Law Enforcement Assistance Program, which provides funds to address law enforcement expenses that are tied to the immediate response for a particular situation.

Departments in Oxford and in the surrounding area will receive money for overtime expenses and other costs incurred during the immediate response to the shooting and in the following days. Much of the funds were awarded to the Oakland County Sheriff's office, with other police and fire departments in Oxford, Orion, and Brandon also receiving assistance.

"This is great news for Oxford and its surrounding communities. The $360,000 grant will provide federal assistance to Oxford-area first responders, funding overtime and additional costs for those who didn't hesitate to run into harm's way and support their community," Slotkin said. "My team and I have been working with Michigan State Police, Oxford-area first responders, and DOJ leadership to secure this grant for two months — and it's so important to see it over the finish line. Our first responders gave everything they could to help Oxford, so it's only right that we get them quick help in return. But we're not done yet. We are working on additional federal funding through a separate grant for things like first responder and community mental health needs, support for victims, and more. Many thanks to local and state officials for all the hard work to bring these dollars in."
