Sen. Tom Barrett has introduced legislation that would allow parents to claim their unborn babies as dependents on their state income taxes.

“This measure will provide tax relief to many overburdened families,” said Barrett, R-Charlotte. “It simply moves up the time at which parents can claim their children on their taxes.”

Senate Bill 366 would change the definition of a “dependent” for tax purposes in the state to include a fetus that has completed at least 12 weeks of gestation and has been under the care and observation of a physician since that time.

The bill would not affect a tax filer’s federal income taxes.

SB 366 has been referred to the Senate Finance Committee.
