Sen. Tom Barrett, R-Charlotte, on Friday called on Attorney General Dana Nessel to offer an opinion on the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission’s (MICRC) repeated efforts to avoid public accountability:
“Despite massive public backlash, the MICRC has made its intentions known to have another closed-door meeting. This commission has flouted the Michigan Constitution and stood in the way of allowing individual commissioners from proposing maps. This list of failures could go on and on. The bottom line is that the MICRC was sold to Michigan voters as a fully transparent and fair way to draw the state’s district maps. It has proven to be the exact opposite. I urge the attorney general to step into the process and issue an opinion that will preserve what is left of the MICRC’s integrity and public accessibility.”
