State Sen. Tom Barrett, R-Charlotte, who announced he would introduce bipartisan legislation this week with Sen. Adam Hollier, D-Detroit, to expand the statute of limitations in order to get justice for the survivors of sexual abuse from University of Michigan athletics physician Dr. Robert Anderson, praised a reported settlement between the university and attorneys for the survivors.
“While justice has eluded hundreds of survivors victimized by Dr. Anderson, and for many years denied by the University of Michigan, this agreement represents an opportunity to begin healing the pain and trauma of those survivors,” Barrett said. “The legislation Sen. Hollier and I were prepared to introduce had strong support and applied added pressure to resolve the impasse impeding a settlement. I want to thank Sen. Hollier for his leadership.”
Jamie White, an attorney for many of the survivors praised Barrett’s leadership, saying, “Our discussions with UM were stalled until Sen. Barrett stepped forward to do the right thing for these survivors. UM recognized that the Barrett-Hollier legislation would get done what the university refused to do. My clients are grateful for their efforts and can now claim some sense of justice.”
