Senate Republicans on Tuesday voted to adopt Sen. Tom Barrett’s resolution calling for an immediate end to public transportation mask mandates.

“Mask mandates are rightly being rolled back in schools, restaurants, and other indoor settings across the country — however, these undue burdens remain in effect for public transportation passengers,” said Barrett, R-Charlotte. “It’s time for the bureaucrats who are still decreeing these mandates to follow the science and lift these heavy-handed and unnecessary measures. People should not have to fear fines, federal repercussions or simply being denied a ride to work because they are not wearing a mask. Individuals have a right to determine for themselves if they choose to wear a mask.”

Senate Resolution 119 states, “With direction from the president of the United States and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the federal Transportation Security Administration has extended the face mask requirement for public transportation through April 18, 2022. This mandate is neither reflective of scientific guidance nor consistent with other mask policies. Airline and public transportation authorities should follow the pattern of relaxation of mandates across the country.”

Copies of the resolution will be sent to the president of the United States, the administrator of the federal Transportation Security Administration, and the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
