Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, condemned violence and threats against public officials during a markup of the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act.

Congressman Cohen said in part:

“Domestic terrorism is a problem in this country. It’s a problem now particularly with white nationalists and white supremacists…The situations are despicable and deplorable and it threatens every public official.  Elected officials should have some safety between them and violence from people who are upset. My colleagues on the other side have seen it important to protect election officials and they should be protected, and so should school board members and so should members of Congress who are coming under constant barrages and threats – maybe on both sides, and on both sides, it’s wrong. I wish we could get beyond the partisan bickering, at least on domestic terrorism where people’s lives are at risk and sometimes taken.”
