Suzanne Bonamici: Firearms are the leading cause of death in children

Oregon

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Firearms are now the leading cause of death for children. In Oregon and across the country, young people have made it clear that thoughts and prayers aren't enough; they're demanding meaningful action.

Today I helped the House pass a ban on high-capacity magazines and a bill to require safe storage of firearms. Soon the House will vote on red flag legislation that will empower family members, with help from law enforcement, to get guns out of the hands of individuals who pose a danger to themselves and others.

Although the work we have done will help save lives, it is not enough. Much of this legislation will stall in the Senate if we do not repeal or reform the filibuster.

We must not grow numb to these horrifying tragedies happening day after day, week after week. It's critical to continue the fight for safer schools and communities. This is about saving lives.

I am inspired by the young voices advocating for change, and I will do everything in my power to help create safer schools for our children and youth.

This Saturday, June 11, students are marching against gun violence in communities across America. If you are able, please join in this weekend!
