Congressman Cohen Announces $7.7 Million to Lower Tennesseans’ Energy Costs

Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Tennessee will receive $7,692,249 in federal funds to bring down heating and cooling costs for working families. These investments, secured through last month’s government funding legislation, will be used to reduce Tennesseans’ energy bills, provide crisis assistance and help weatherize homes.

“As working families contend with rising global energy prices, it is important that we bring down costs and ensure that Memphis and Tennessee homes remain safe, comfortable and affordable,” said Congressman Cohen.

This funding is administered under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). These investments are especially critical for lower-income households and communities of color who continue to disproportionately feel the impact of climate change and extreme weather.

The funding announced this week represents the fourth round of LIHEAP assistance over the past year and was included in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 appropriations bill. Congressman Cohen was one of only three Representatives from Tennessee to vote for the bill. In total, Congressional Democrats have fought for and won $139,995,607 in energy assistance for Tennessee households since last May. In addition to Congressional appropriations, previous rounds were delivered through:

  • American Rescue Plan: $64,310,966
  • Fiscal Year 2021 Continuing Resolution: $66,094,629
  • Bipartisan Infrastructure Law: $1,897,763
