Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today questioned expert witnesses at a Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet hearing on “Building Confidence in the Supreme Court through Ethics and Recusal Reform.”
In his questions to the witnesses, Congressman Cohen said in part:
“The fact is this doesn’t have to do with Clarence Thomas. It doesn’t have to do with Justice Ginsberg. It has to do with ethics. Everybody should agree that the Supreme Court, which is the most powerful institution in our government, should have ethical guidelines. And if they have conflicts, they should recuse themselves or they should disclose them. And there have been instances shown where justices have had conflicts and they haven’t recused and they haven’t disclosed.”
