Congressman Steve Cohen (TN), Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, today managed the House floor debate on H.R. 6943, the Public Safety Officer Support Act, and H.R. 2992, the Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Law Enforcement Training Act. He also managed the floor debate on a resolution condemning rising antisemitism.
During the debate on the Public Safety Officer Support Act, he said in part:
“The Public Safety Officer Support Act of 2022 is another bipartisan bill that expands eligibility for public safety officers’ benefits programs to include stress- and trauma-related injuries and death by suicide for law enforcement officers and their families…Public safety officers are 25 times more likely to develop acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or other mental health conditions than the general public. They’ve got a tough job…The need for this worthy and overdue change is even more apparent as we continue to grieve the tragic loss of four police officers who died by suicide after responding to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. They tried to defend us. They did defend us.”
