Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), who as a state senator worked for years to pass the Tennessee Lottery that has provided billions of dollars in HOPE and Tennessee Promise Scholarships over 18 years, today applauded news that the HOPE scholarship amounts awarded to students will be increasing in the new school year.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“I am proud to be recognized as the father of the Tennessee Lottery which funds the HOPE and Tennessee Promise Scholarships that have given hundreds of thousands of Tennessee students the opportunity to get a post-secondary education. I am pleased to see that the success of the lottery now permits the recently enacted increase in scholarship awards. This program is set up to continue in perpetuity and provide educational opportunities for generations to come.”
Since it began in 2004, the Tennessee Lottery has raised more than $6 billion and has so far provided $5 billion to Tennessee higher-education programs including 1.7 million scholarships and grants to Tennessee students.
A bill signed into law on Wednesday increases the HOPE Scholarship at four-year schools from $3,500 to $4,500 for freshmen and sophomores and from $4,500 to $5,700 for juniors and seniors. The scholarship for students at two-year schools will rise to $3,200 from $3,000.
