Today the House of Representatives voted to pass a bipartisan resolution introduced by Congressman Andy Levin (D-MI) and Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH), condemning the February 1 coup by the Burmese military (Tatmadaw) and calling for the Tatmadaw to release all political prisoners.
"I am thrilled that the House has passed this resolution and taken a stand with the people of Burma against the coup and the military's barbaric crackdown on protestors," said Rep. Levin. "The Burmese people continue to resist the takeover of their government and the arrest of their elected leaders with inspiring bravery and creativity. It is imperative that the United States makes clear that the Burmese people have the full support of the United States House of Representatives. This resolution calls not just for the return to power of the civilian government, but also, subsequently, constitutional reforms to address the undemocratic power conferred to the Tatmadaw in Parliament and the disenfranchisement of Burma's ethnic minorities. Today, we've affirmed that we stand with all of the people of Burma in their ambition for sustainable peace, a genuine democracy, and the realization of human rights for all."
The resolution passed the House by a vote of 398 to 14.
