How can we overcome the violence of the past when we are confronted daily with the violence of the present? I believe the answer is through connecting the struggle of the Jewish people to the struggles of oppressed people around the world today. We must break the machinery of bigotry and anti-Semitism built to divide us.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09) released the following statement in recognition of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.
"When I reflect on the Holocaust, on the six million Jews killed to carry out a horrific anti-Semitic fantasy, I see the violence and the hatred of the murderers and the apathy of the bystanders—both inside and outside of Germany—who knew what was happening and failed to act.
"But each year I strive to transform the anger and frustration of a community nearly exterminated decades ago into mindful action today. I believe Holocaust Remembrance Day should be a time of reconstruction. It is a day when Jews—and all people who lost so much—can redouble our efforts to build a world where the horrors of the Holocaust will never happen again. It is an opportunity for others to reflect on why the world stood by while these atrocities unfolded and to commit to choosing active solidarity with Jews and all groups targeted by white supremacy today. To honor the six million Jews and millions of other marginalized people who lost their lives, we must combat the inequality that turns societies against themselves, that pits neighbor against neighbor.
