Our campaign was disappointed to learn that Gov. John Bel Edwards endorsed Luke Mixon in the race for US Senate long before Louisianians cast their
votes in November’s primary election. Syrita’s disappointment is amplified by the fact that Gov. Edwards did not afford her the opportunity to share with him her vision for a stronger Louisiana and a better America. We believe that the decision is inappropriate and premature.
Gov. Edwards' opinion that Mixon “knows how to get the job done” is baffling: of the three Democratic candidates, Mixon is the least experienced. Syrita is an experienced policymaker, a leader in economic equity, and the race’s only female candidate. As the founder and executive
director of Operation Restoration, Syrita has worked both within and beyond the Louisiana state legislature to push for legislation that helps everyday Louisianians make their lives and their children’s lives better. Mixon often talks about “moving Louisiana forward,” but his lack of experience makes this seem implausible. Mixon has never worked to pass legislation at any level.
Moreover, Gov. Edwards’ endorsement ignores the racial and gender injustice plaguing our state and country. As a formerly incarcerated working mother raised in rural Louisiana, Syrita knows the struggle of Louisiana’s hard-working people firsthand. This lived experience gives her an edge Mixon can only talk about in a vague way, much like John Kennedy does. As a U.S. Senator, she’ll continue her proven record of fighting to bring real change for everyone.
Gov. Edwards’ endorsement on the Senate election arrived while he had yet to sign a budget for the State of Louisiana. He focused his efforts on supporting a candidate in a federal election over a month before qualifying takes place, all while Louisiana’s teachers, state employees, and infrastructure waited on the money they needed to operate effectively. The state government is still, moreover, in legislative session - this should be the Governor’s only priority.
Syrita believes that to put Louisiana first, we must put Louisianians first. Louisiana deserves more than what Governor John Bel Edwards gave our state yesterday: we urge voters to put Louisiana first in the upcoming U.S. Senate primary election.
