The co-chairs of the House Haiti Caucus released the following statement ahead of an Organization of American States (OAS) delegation to Haiti:
"As members of Congress who wish to see a swift and peaceful end to Haiti's current political and constitutional crisis, we welcome all efforts to bring about a Haitian-led solution.
"We hope, however, that this delegation will do just that: focus on solutions that put the rights and wellbeing of the Haitian people first. We are alarmed by reports that the delegation does not plan to discuss the constitutional referendum planned for June 27 and will only focus on elections scheduled for later this year. This referendum, widely considered to be illegal, will only accelerate Haiti's path toward authoritarianism. The elections cannot be separated from the referendum, and any discussion that sidesteps this issue cannot produce workable solutions.
"We strongly encourage the delegation to listen to calls from the Haitian people and civil society and tackle meaningfully the issues that are fueling this crisis. Failure to do so in favor of pressing for elections at any cost will do nothing to bring about lasting change."
