Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09) released the following statement following the first hearing for his constituent, detained journalist Danny Fenster in Myanmar:
"This morning, Danny Fenster appeared in court in Yangon's Insein Prison to face a charge under section 505-A of the Myanmar Penal Code. In the proceedings, no specific reason was provided for his detention. He has still not been given consular access to U.S. government officials who continue to seek to see him and they were not allowed to attend his hearing. He was remanded to Insein Prison for two more weeks before he will appear in court again on July 1.
"Danny Fenster has at all times acted in the fullest compliance with Myanmar law, including Section 505-A of the Myanmar Penal Code, as amended and restated. He has always conducted himself respectfully and in adherence to the laws, codes, and customs of Myanmar. I am glad that all other foreign journalists known to be in prison in Myanmar have been released, including just this week when Nathan Muang was finally sent back to the U.S. Danny Fenster has done nothing wrong. It is past time for him to come home as well.
"I once again call for his immediate and unconditional release."
