Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09) member of the House Education & Labor Committee and workforce policy expert released the following statement:
"As Americans prepare to celebrate the birth of our nation, I am heartened by the announcement of a strong jobs report. 850,000 jobs created in June, including 662,000 private-sector jobs is a great indication that the work being done by the Biden administration and Congress is having a positive effect. No doubt we would have been worse off without the robust investments of the American Rescue Plan.
"However, a lot of work remains to be done, especially since we know from past experience that the jobs report does not fully capture the employment landscape. It is vital that lawmakers not rest on our laurels as a result of these positive job numbers.
"Even in a month of strong job growth, long-term unemployment increased by 233,000 people. That's because long-term unemployed workers face unique barriers to getting back into the workforce. We need targeted, local programs, like my Long-Term Unemployment Elimination Act with Sen. Chris Van Hollen, to help get these people back on the job.
"And to maintain and expand this growth, we also must ensure that all Americans have access to childcare. The lack of childcare is a huge hindrance for parents looking to work, especially working moms. I will continue to fight to make sure we have assistance for long-term unemployment and access to childcare in the upcoming infrastructure and reconciliation packages.
