An amendment authored by Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09), Co-Chair of the House Haiti Caucus and member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, to H.Res 549, a resolution condemning the assassination of Jovenel Moïse, passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Rep. Levin's amendment ensures protocols in Haiti's constitution are described accurately.
"This resolution passed today recognizes that, in the wake of Moïse's horrible assassination, we must chart a new path forward when it comes to our Haiti policy," said Rep. Levin. "Most importantly, though, it makes clear that the Haitian people must be the ones to lead Haiti's democracy into a new era. It supports their right to determine their own country's future—one of prosperity and lasting security. I thank Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and Chair Gregory Meeks for bringing this resolution up and including my amendment today."
Congressman Levin's amendment passed by voice vote.
H.Res 549 condemns the assassination of Jovenel Moïse and urges United States and global support for Haiti-led solutions. As Co-Chair and Co-Founder of the House Haiti Caucus and a member of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, Migration and International Economic Policy that covers Haiti, Rep. Levin has advocated for the United States and other foreign powers not to interfere or back certain politicians but rather to support Haitian civil society's efforts to rebuild their democracy in the wake of the assassination.
