Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09), released the following statement after the Biden administration announced the extension of the federal eviction moratorium:

"I commend The White House for realizing that housing is health and issuing an eviction ban in areas with surging COVID-19 cases. Any attempt to control the spread of the virus would be all for naught if millions of families are forced into homelessness.

"This is yet another testament to the power of organizing and solidarity. I'm grateful to my colleague Congresswoman Cori Bush for seeing that it was time to stop talking and start acting, and all those who stood in unity and demonstrated on the steps of the Capitol for the last five days."

"Our focus now has to be ensuring that Congress, the Biden administration, and state and local governments continue to work together so that housing assistance can get out the door quickly and efficiently.

"I applaud President Biden and the CDC for utilizing their legal authority to protect people from the threat of eviction. People living in counties with high or substantial levels of community transmission should not have to worry being evicted from their homes. At the same time, there are those who live in places where the virus might not be raging at the moment that have no way of paying rent through no fault of their own. We need to protect these at-risk people as well, which is why we need a full eviction moratorium across the country."
