Congressman Andy Levin released the following update on his constituent, Danny Fenster, a journalist wrongfully imprisoned since May 24 by the military junta in Burma in their ongoing crackdown on a free and independent press:

"In today's hearing, the Burmese authorities first mentioned the 17-1 Unlawful Association Act charge against Danny Fenster, closely related to the previously reported charge under the amended 505A penal code for speaking out against the government. Human Rights Watch notes this charge has been ‘used to prosecute political activists and journalists reporting on opposition groups.'

"The military has still not given a reason for the charges against Danny, and he remains the only foreign journalist held in custody. Four months of pre-trial detention with no new answers, only new charges coming to light, is completely unacceptable.

"Looking forward, today was Danny's first in-person hearing since lockdown due to COVID-19 began in Insein Prison two months ago. Danny was able to speak to his family and I am optimistic that his case may move forward more swiftly. I have spoken with the Fenster family, the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs and our U.S. Embassy in Rangoon today. We are steadfast in our commitment to reiterating Danny's innocence and calling for his immediate and unconditional release."
