Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09), member of the House Education and Labor Committee and workforce policy expert, released the following statement:

"Today's jobs report shows that President Biden and the Democratic majority in Congress are off to a good start helping propel the strongest recovery from any recent recession, thanks to the American Rescue Plan.

"However, the report makes clearer than ever that we must accelerate our efforts with vital investments to create jobs and grow our workforce. We are seeing some wage and manufacturing growth, but the gains in this job report went to men, with women actually losing jobs for the month. This continues a disturbing trend that we have seen throughout the pandemic.

"That's why we need to enact President Biden's Build Back Better Act as fully as possible, since it will address these issues squarely by funding free community college like in my America's College Promise Act, workforce development, infrastructure jobs, childcare, pre-K and paid leave, ensuring that women in particular can rejoin the labor market and help take care of their families with good-paying jobs. If we want to make meaningful change happen for the American people, we have to deliver bold policies. All of the items in the Build Back Better Act are vitally needed to spur job growth in the economy. Like I told President Biden last week in the dugout at the Congressional Baseball Game, I am committed to ensuring his Build Back Better Act passes because the state of our economy and quality of life for working people hangs in the balance.

"Finally, I once again urge all Americans who are able to be vaccinated to do so as soon as they can. The pandemic is far from over and taking this safe, simple step will not only help protect public health but also restore our economy."
