Today, Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09), member of the House Education and Labor Committee and workforce policy expert, released the following statement:
"I'm excited that today's jobs report demonstrates strong job growth, adding 531,000 jobs. Our nation's unemployment rate also fell to 4.6 percent, the lowest since May 2020. This is a promising trend, especially coupled with the upward revisions for August and September. The investments made in the American Rescue Plan are having a positive effect.
"I'm eager to see our jobs numbers continue to grow and make sure people get good jobs with decent wages and working conditions. That's exactly what the Build Back Better Act will do: deliver better protections for both unionized and non-unionized workers with increased penalties for violations of the National Labor Relations Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act. For the sake of our economy, it is vital that Congress passes this legislation and sends it to President Biden's desk.
"While I'm pleased to see upward job growth, our job numbers still have not returned to pre-Delta variant levels. Slower job growth since the Delta variant has been accompanied by slower wage growth in most industries. We need to build off the historic investments we are making, while also removing the structural obstacles the long-term unemployed face.
"I continue to encourage all workers to seek vaccination, and receive a booster shot where eligible. Together, we can protect our communities and revive our economy."
