Today, Congressman Andy Levin, member of the House Education and Labor Committee, voted to pass H.R. 4673, the Ensuring Veterans' Smooth Transition (EVEST) Act, which passed the House by a vote of 265-163.
"Lingering health care issues from military service, including mental health challenges, are a significant obstacle for servicemen and women returning home and reintegrating into society. By automatically enrolling all eligible veterans into VA healthcare services, we will better ensure no veteran is left behind," said Congressman Levin. "Commonsense policies like the EVEST Act send the message to Americans signing up to serve our country that the government will prioritize their health care needs and be ready to deliver high quality treatment and care. I'm grateful to my colleague Chairman Mark Takano for his work on this important effort."
The EVEST Act requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to automatically enroll veterans who are eligible for health care into the VA system upon the receipt of information from the Defense Manpower Data Center of the Department of Defense that proves eligibility of such veterans for enrollment and allows veterans to opt-out should they wish not to enroll.
