Carol Miller for Congress: Fights to Protect West Virginians from Inflation & Rising Gas Prices in Ways and Means Committee

West Virginia

WASHINGTON D.C. – In a House Ways and Means Committee markup of Democrats' $3.5 trillion tax hikes and spending spree, Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) introduced an amendment to protect West Virginians from rising inflation and gas prices.

Specifically, Congresswoman Miller's amendment would suspend Superfund excise taxes on gasoline for consumers when gas prices exceed $3.00 and suspend Superfund excise taxes on chemicals when inflation exceeds 2.5%. This would shield everyday Americans from the effects of damaging liberal energy policies – such as killing the Keystone XL pipeline and banning domestic fracking – that result in higher gas prices.

"Like many families across America today, I am deeply concerned with rising inflation, caused directly by Democrat's reckless spending policies. Today we are attempting to stop a bill that would exacerbate those issues and lead to Americans further losing spending power to pay for the necessities of daily life," said Congresswoman Miller.

"Increased fuel prices also impact those who must commute long distances by car and in communities with limited opportunities for public transport. President Biden promised not to raise taxes on those making less than four-hundred-thousand-dollars a year, but in fact, these increased prices on daily necessities are already taxing my constituents far beyond their means.

"President Biden cancelling the Keystone XL pipeline, proposing to ban domestic fracking, and declaring a moratorium on oil and gas leases on federal lands have all led to higher prices for American consumers. Accepting this amendment is a small step in reversing the anti-American energy trend of the current ruling party, and protecting taxpayers and their pocketbooks, especially those least able to afford it."

Committee Democrats voted to defeat this amendment.
