Today, Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township), member of the House Education and Labor Committee and workforce policy expert, released the following statement:

“Today’s jobs report shows strong ongoing growth for our nation’s economy. The economy added 431,000 jobs in March as the unemployment rate fell to 3.6 percent, its lowest since February 2020. The unemployment rate continues to fall, approaching pre-pandemic levels.

“Private-sector employment is now only 0.7 percent away from pre-pandemic levels. We are on track to return to pre-pandemic labor market conditions by the end of 2022. It is clear that the bold investments Congressional Democrats and President Biden delivered in the American Rescue Plan are paying off for the American people.

“We must continue to advocate for workers in pursuit of good jobs and fair wages in all sectors of the economy, especially as many Americans face rising costs for essential goods. That’s why we need President Biden to take executive action to lower costs for Americans—from bringing down prescription drug prices to cancelling student loan debt and more.

“Further, it is clear we need to do more to increase the labor participation rate.  For this reason, I am proud to be an original sponsor of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2022. Adequate funding for workforce development allows Americans get the tools and skills they need to secure good jobs with high wages and comprehensive benefits. I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress to move this important bill.”
