Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09), a former synagogue president and member of the Congressional Caucus on Black-Jewish Relations, Latino Jewish Congressional Caucus and House Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism, released the following statement on the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) audit of antisemitic incidents in the United States:
“The Anti-Defamation League released a concerning but important report highlighting antisemitic incidents in the United States that occurred in 2021. Alarmingly, the audit found that antisemitic incidents reached an all-time high last year and increased across all categories—assault, harassment and vandalism. Further, attacks against Jewish institutions increased 61 percent, incidents at K-12 schools increased 106 percent, and incidents on college campuses increased 21 percent. State-specific data revealed that Michiganders experienced more than double the number of antisemitic incidents in 2021 compared to 2020.
“The ADL’s latest report reveals what we all know to be true: the scourge of antisemitism continues to threaten Jews across the United States. Whether worshipping in their synagogues, frequenting their local Jewish Community Centers, attending Jewish schools or just walking down the street, Jews face growing threats and hostility.
“I am grateful that the Senate finally confirmed Deborah Lipstadt as Special Envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism around the world. This report reaffirms in the strongest terms how much work we have to do at home, as well. I urge my colleagues to reconcile with the findings in this report and recommit to calling out antisemitism in all its forms – loudly and consistently. We must continue building coalitions, both within Congress and beyond, to fight antisemitism and battle all forms of hate, ignorance and bigotry.”
