Today, Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township), member of the House Education and Labor Committee and workforce policy expert, released the following statement:
“Today’s jobs report shows that our economic recovery from the pandemic has continued, with a trend of positive job growth and 428,000 jobs created last month alone. Since President Biden took office, largely due to the American Rescue Plan, over 8 million new jobs have been created and unemployment remains at 3.6 percent. Today, we are seeing the lowest trend of joblessness in nearly five decades. Similarly, 95 percent of jobs lost during the pandemic are back, showing a tremendous level of job growth.
“Still, Americans are feeling the strain of inflation from rising gas prices to daily necessities in the grocery store. Putin’s brutal war in Ukraine is affecting everything, from prices at the gas pump to everyday commodities like wheat, a major export of Ukraine and Russia. We also must do more to hold Big Oil accountable for price-gouging the American people while continuing to rake in record-breaking profits. As unemployment continues to drop, workers’ wages are still growing slower than inflation. I’m laser-focused on doing everything I can to help raise wages for workers, bring manufacturing back to America, drive down costs and fight the effects of inflation.
“One of the quickest ways we can lower costs for working families is by having President Biden utilize executive action to lower prescription drug prices and cancel student debt for nearly 45 million Americans. Such bold action would put hundreds of dollars a month back into the pockets of millions of families who are currently struggling to pay their bills—without adding to inflation. I look forward to working with my colleagues and the President to get this done for working families.”
