Today, Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township), announced that four students he nominated received acceptance into U.S. Service Academies. Three will attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and one will attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

“One of the things I cherish the most about being a Member of Congress is that each year I have the privilege and distinct honor to nominate some of the brightest, most diligent and hardworking students in Oakland and Macomb Counties to the U.S. Service Academies,” said Congressman Andy Levin. “Service academies prepare our nation’s next generation of leaders to answer the call to service. Peter, Nathaniel, Brody and Tahei have already proven that they are dedicated to giving back to their communities and I commend them for their commitment to serving our nation.”

Below is a list of Congressman Levin’s nominations:

  • Peter Merten, Royal Oak, Royal Oak High School, nominee to the U.S. Military Academy – West Point
  • Nathaniel Schmidt, Royal Oak, University of Detroit Jesuit High School, nominee to the U.S. Naval Academy
  • Brody Wolfe Ross, Bloomfield Hills, Detroit Country Day School, nominee to the U.S. Military Academy – West Point
  • Tahei Daniel Witsil, Pleasant Ridge, University of Detroit Jesuit High School, nominee to the U.S. Military Academy – West Point
The Service Academy application process requires a nomination from the student’s representative in the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senator, the Vice President, or the President. The U.S. Service Academies include the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, NY, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King's Point, NY. After a nomination is confirmed, the academy will review the whole candidate to determine admission. Students who are accepted become scholars at some of the most prestigious military institutions in the country, followed by a commission in the Army, Navy, Marines or Air Force, as well as a five-year service commitment after graduation.
