Today, Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township), announced that he secured over $1.9 million in funding for Oakland and Macomb Counties in the Fiscal Year 2023 Interior Appropriations bill, which included the following projects:

  • Drake Sports Park Pond Remediation in West Bloomfield - $320,000
  • Lake St. Clair Trash Capture - $1,600,000
“Last year, historic levels of rain hit Metro Detroit, flooding streets and homes and putting thousands in harm's way. As a lifelong environmentalist and former clean energy entrepreneur, I know one of the best ways to address climate change is to empower local communities to respond,” said Congressman Levin. “That’s why I was so honored to work side by side with local leaders and elected officials to bring these important projects before Congress, to remediate stormwater detention ponds at Drake Sports Park and improve water quality in Lake St. Clair. I would like to thank Appropriations Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro, Interior Subcommittee Chairwoman Betty McCollum and their staff for including our important priorities.”

“On behalf of the West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation Commission, I am ecstatic that the Drake Sport Park Detention Pond Project has been included in the 2023 Interior Environment and Agencies Funding Bill,” said Jennifer Tucker, Executive Director of the West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation Commission. “This project is not only instrumental to storm water management but also will enhance the natural resources at Drake Sports Park. We are very thankful to Congressman Andy Levin for championing this project for the West Bloomfield Community.”

“Expansion of this pilot project and the funding for it will not only protect Lake St. Clair from pollution and improve water quality, it will benefit wildlife, the surrounding environment and also the many people who enjoy the lake for fishing, boating or other recreation,” said Candice S. Miller, Macomb County Public Workers Commissioner. “We appreciate Congressman Levin's hard work and support for this project.”

Congressman Levin submitted several Community Project Funding (CPF) requests to the Appropriations Committee. Information on the status of additional requests will be announced in the coming days. Now that this funding has been included in the Appropriations Committee draft bill, it must be approved by the full House, then the Senate and signed by President Biden before we can be sure it will reach our communities.
