Today, Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township), member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, released the following statement after voting to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant federal gun safety legislation in nearly thirty years:

“The United States continues to have by far the highest gun violence rates among all developed nations. After Parkland, Oxford, Buffalo, Uvalde, Tulsa and so many other mass shootings, the American people have been crying out for gun reform measures that save lives and curb gun violence. Though this bill does not cover every measure we need, it does include several significant provisions that will protect people. By enhancing background checks for buyers under 21, disarming domestic abusers by beginning to close the ‘boyfriend loophole,’ encouraging states to establish ‘red flag’ laws, cracking down on gun trafficking and investing in mental health resources, we are taking a necessary first step to address our nation’s gun violence epidemic.

“While I am pleased that my colleagues from both sides of the aisle came together to send long overdue gun control reform measures to President Biden’s desk, I remain committed to doing much more to protect our communities. The fight is far from over.”
