Today, Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township), longtime environmentalist and former green energy entrepreneur released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency:
“Yet again, the Supreme Court has eroded its legitimacy with another catastrophic decision for humanity. This time, the highest court in the land has sided with fossil-fuel corporate interests and moved to gut the federal government’s authority to protect our communities and the planet from toxic pollution and climate change under the Clean Air Act.
“Within the span of a week, this Court has not only decided to force pregnant people to give birth but has also refused to ensure the children people are forced to bear will have clean air to breathe.
“Justice Kagan has it right when she points out in dissent that, ‘whatever else this Court may know about, it does not have a clue about how to address climate change.’ And yet the Court appoints itself decision maker in place of ‘Congress or the expert agency.’ Beyond the realm of the EPA and the horrifying effect of the instant case, the Court seems intent on using its tortured ‘major questions’ doctrine to cripple the government from serving the people across the board.
“This supermajority conservative court has ignited a deep crisis of legitimacy for what should be a solid pillar of our democracy. They are making plain that the current Court does not represent the people or further the principles on which our nation was founded, but rather the dark money interests and extremists who installed them there.
“As someone who has fought tooth and nail to save our one precious planet long before I walked the halls of Congress, I reiterate loudly my call for bold, urgent action. By passing meaningful legislation, taking executive action and organizing our communities, we have a real shot at saving life on Earth as we know it and giving generations to come the future they deserve. I won’t stop until the job is done.”
