Today, Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) sent a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi advocating for the swift passage of the $52 billion in funding for the domestic semiconductor research, design, and manufacturing provisions in the CHIPS for America Act, which passed in the overwhelmingly bipartisan U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (USICA), which passed in the Senate in June.
“Used car prices are at historic highs, dealerships are running extremely low on new vehicle inventory and nearly 13,000 Michigan automotive workers filed unemployment claims last week alone,” said Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI). “These shocking figures are due to the semiconductor chip shortage and supply chain issues that have been plaguing American automakers for months. This is absolutely unacceptable. I am proud to represent thousands of automotive workers in Congress. These men and women put America on wheels and are being forced to file unemployment claims to get by, as auto plants are left with no choice but to suspend productions o. We need to pass legislation to remedy this now. Our automotive workers and their families are counting on us and it is time to step up”
