Today, Rep. Haley Stevens (MI-11) released the following statement prior to tomorrow’s State of the Union Address by President Biden:
“Tomorrow evening I will be attending President Biden’s first State of the Union Address. I look forward to the President’s address during this precarious time of global instability as Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has declared war on Ukraine. I remain deeply concerned about those impacted by this aggression, including my constituent, Paul Whelan, who has been the subject of the Kremlin's oppression for over three years, wrongfully imprisoned in a former Russian gulag on false charges of espionage. Since I became a Member of Congress, I have been working to secure his release alongside my Michigan Congressional colleagues and the Whelan family. I implore President Biden to address the false imprisonment of Americans by the Kremlin tomorrow evening. Paul must be protected from Russian retaliation against the United States and brought home to Michigan. We must recognize how much is at stake here for members of our own community who carry the weight of loved ones endangered by Putin's cruelty and act decisively in the face of these continued, baseless assaults.”
“Americans are already feeling increased price pressures, especially at the gas pump. I am eager to work with the Biden Administration to ensure that the effects of Russian aggression are not felt by American families who are trying to make ends meet. The crisis in Ukraine has further shown the need to shore up our global supply chains and bring the manufacturing of semiconductor chips back to the United States so that we do not rely upon foreign governments for these critical products that are essential to our everyday lives. I look forward to hearing of the President’s plan to reduce price pressures and support America's manufacturers during this uncertain time.”
