As the Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Research and Technology, I am honored to be named to the America COMPETES Act Conference by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Chairwoman of the Science, Space and Technology Committee, Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson. I will serve as a representative from the Science, Space and Technology Committee as a group of Democrats and Republicans from the House and Senate work to iron out the differences in the House and Senate versions of this bipartisan innovation bill and get it ready to be signed into law.
The COMPETES Act is critical for Michigan and our economic future. I am delighted that this package includes so many provisions I have previously led through the House. On the Science, Space, and Technology Committee we built a transformative piece of legislation from the ground up with rigorous input from the scientific community, industry, and academia. As a conferee, I will work to ensure that the U.S. makes bold investments that will spur innovation, create jobs, support American manufacturing, and build a strong and diverse STEM workforce ready to address the challenges of a rapidly changing world. The COMPETES Act contains urgently needed funding to address the semiconductor chips crisis that has dramatically impacted Michigan’s small to midsize manufacturers. I have been advocating for the inclusion of this funding, and the swift passage of the CHIPS Act for the past year. We must bring semiconductor chip manufacturing back to the United States, reducing our dependence on foreign entities and bringing certainly to our automotive manufacturing sector.
I look forward to working with my colleagues from across Congress throughout the conference process to invest in America’s most valuable resource – the talent of our people. This is truly the honor of a lifetime, and I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and get this bill to President Biden’s desk.
